<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has just launched the 50Steel/171, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Almax49.99m (164'0&quot;)Sanlorenzo2024">Almax</a>, the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> superyacht to feature a green methanol fuel cell system developed by the shipyard in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1981" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Siemens (Company)">Siemens Energy</a>. First announced in February 2022, she has been developed as part of the shipyard’s path towards net zero, called 'Road to 2030', which will culminate with the launch of the first carbon neutral vessel before the end of this decade. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Almax49.99m (164'0&quot;)Sanlorenzo2024">Almax</a> will also feature the newly developed HER (Hidden Engine Room) system, a revolutionary concept that has made it possible to modify the yacht’s traditional interior configuration. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311872/image/large-c5c5acd43c4fd05a8e810ff2662cf731.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311872">Massimo Perotti explains; "Safeguarding the sea is essential, as a common good of inestimable value, a collective obligation that directly affects our industry. Capable of transforming green methanol into hydrogen and then into electricity, the system will be able to power all the yacht's hotel equipment, such as AC and lighting, and eventually to recharge the batteries, without storing the hydrogen on board.A revolutionary solution, which will allow the vessel to generate electricity up to a maximum of 100kW, with propulsion engines and diesel generator inactive: the system is totally carbon neutral and significantly extends the time spent at anchor without consuming diesel fuel. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/948204048?share=copy" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> is a trailblazer on the path to carbon neutrality in the yachting world,” adds Massimo Perotti. “Through the relentless work of our R&amp;D department, we continue to take revolutionary steps in introducing technological systems aimed at reducing the environmental impact of yachts. We are proud to receive this approval from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyds Ships (Company)">Lloyd’s Register</a>, as we work together to pioneer decarbonisation pathways for the yachting industry.”At present, methanol is one of the most credible fuels for replacing diesel fuel as it is already available in more than 100 ports around the world. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>'s strategy uses green methanol, produced using only renewable energy sources captured from the atmosphere through so-called carbon capture systems. This means that the amount of CO2 released into the air in the combustion process is equivalent to the amount removed from the environment to produce green methanol, allowing for a circular and completely carbon neutral system. Green methanol is therefore a good candidate for replacing more polluting substances such as ammonia, diesel or liquefied natural gas.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311871/image/large-91b6d90eafa2f70d45e61ed863a67a6c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311871">The HER (Hidden Engine Room) systemAt the heart of the newly launched 50Steel superyacht is a new, patented, interior configuration designed to accommodate the fuel cell system and complex technical areas without compromising the interior guest spaces. Rather than the traditional layout of two technical levels, there is a move to a horizontal development of the propulsion equipment and a new distribution of the technical area on the under lower technical deck, freeing up the lower deck for guest and crew areas.&nbsp;In this modified layout, an additional saloon has been created on the lower deck, where the engines would normally sit, coined the Ocean Lounge which is directly connected to the beach club with its swimming pool and extensive seating area. On the other side, the guest staterooms are connected to the gym and spa areas, offering a new level of connectivity on the lower deck. Crew areas are located to the fore with their own access to the upper and lower decks and discrete access to the four lower deck guest staterooms. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310257/image/large-38a481483825f42c7449a9031f1fbe7c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310257">A masterclass in design<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Almax49.99m (164'0&quot;)Sanlorenzo2024">Almax</a> has been designed by the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Zuccon International Project</a>, and has been developed on five staggered levels, creating a unique layout that boasts generous volumes and spacious areas both on deck and inside the yacht. "The real challenge was to be able to interpret a boat that was extremely complex in terms of design while maintaining balance and simplicity of lines, a study aimed at simplifying features which gives harmony and balance to the eye of the beholder," explains Bernardo Zuccon, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Zuccon International Project</a>. Her exterior is sleek and elegant despite her 499GT, with her large decks to aft and a tiered deck configuration to the fore that offers that yacht a sporty aesthetic.&nbsp;Ascending five steps from the Ocean Lounge, the guests reach the main deck and the heart of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Almax49.99m (164'0&quot;)Sanlorenzo2024">Almax</a>, which consists of a large and spacious main saloon. The stairs, which have been designed to let the light filter through with glass sides, run through the interior of the yacht, connecting the different areas, from the gym and spa area on the lower deck to the second salon on the upper deck. From the main deck saloon, guests are led to a middle deck where the dining area is located, which then leads up to another saloon on the upper deck.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268405/image/large-0fe4b56c7fa5bf4533eb5955ddd1c1c0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268405">This unusual layout, with the half deck in the centre, has allowed the shipyard to offer unprecedented ceiling heights for a 50-metre yacht, of up to 3.35-metres. The deck with the dining table is also home to the master stateroom, which is a full beam stateroom complete with office, ensuite and dressing room.The connection between the spaces is also exalted on the exterior: the three upper levels of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Almax49.99m (164'0&quot;)Sanlorenzo2024">Almax</a> communicate by means of a series of stairs, with a maximum difference in height of one and a half metres, which do not affect the profile of the yacht. Remaining consistent with the principle of maximum liveability of the spaces that characterise <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> yachts, the beach club at the stern, with its three open terraces, becomes in anchor mode a 120 square-metre beach on the sea.The superyacht’s interior is elegant and contemporary in its styling, within a concept by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>’s art director <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/78" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lissoni & Partners (Company)">Piero Lissoni</a>.
